India and Greece have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, focusing on defence and security cooperation. During a high-level meeting in New Delhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held discussions with Greece's Minister of National Defence, Nikolaos Georgios S. Dendias, underscoring the growing depth and resilience of relations between the two nations.

Singh described the India-Greece partnership as "time-tested and strategic," highlighting the shared values that underpin the relationship—peace, stability, freedom, and adherence to the rule of law. He noted that these common principles form a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in an increasingly complex global security environment.

The Defence Minister recalled that bilateral ties were elevated to the level of a strategic partnership following the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Greece in 2023. The relationship was further reinforced by the subsequent visit of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to India in February 2024. These reciprocal visits marked a significant milestone in diplomatic engagement, signalling a shared intent to deepen cooperation across sectors.

While India and Greece have not yet signed a formal weapons purchase contract, there are clear indications, that Greece is exploring the idea of acquiring Indian military hardware and enhancing defence industrial cooperation.

The Joint Declaration of Intent signed between India and Greece is an important step that goes beyond mere military exercises — it lays the groundwork for co-production, co-development, and potential exports of defence equipment

During recent talks in New Delhi between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Greek Defence Minister Nikolaos Georgios S. Dendias, India showcased its indigenous defence systems, including the Akash air defence system and other cutting-edge technologies.

Greek officials have been reported to express interest in learning more about Indian systems. Defence analysts suggest possible future discussions on Indian-made missiles like BrahMos or other advanced platforms, although no formal agreement has been publicly confirmed as of now.

Focus on Defence Industrial Collaboration

The Joint Declaration of Intent signed between India and Greece is an important step that goes beyond mere military exercises — it lays the groundwork for co-production, co-development, and potential exports of defence equipment.

The declaration aims to develop a five-year roadmap for defence cooperation that could encompass joint ventures in manufacturing, technology sharing, and possibly future procurement deals.

This move reflects both countries' interest in linking India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative with Greece's own defence industry reforms — potentially enabling Greek acquisition of systems built in India, or joint production ventures.

Greece's Broader Defence Procurement

It's important to note that Greece continues to procure defence equipment from other partners as well — for example, it has ongoing deals with European suppliers like France for systems such as Exocet anti-ship missiles — but expanding ties with India could diversify its sources and reflect shared strategic priorities in maritime security and technology cooperation.

According to official statements, the two leaders issued a Joint Declaration of Intent aimed at strengthening defence cooperation. As reported, both ministers emphasised that the strategic partnership is rooted in mutual respect and shared democratic values. The declaration seeks to expand defence industrial collaboration and enhance indigenous defence capabilities. The Joint Statement also highlights joint initiatives in research, innovation, and technology exchange.

The MoD stated that the agreement is designed to bolster defence industrial cooperation, contributing to self-reliance and technological advancement in both countries. The move aligns with India's broader efforts to promote indigenous defence production and diversify international partnerships.

Beyond defence, the discussions also covered economic engagement, India-European Union relations, and coordination at multilateral platforms. Both sides reiterated their commitment to maintaining a free, open, and rules-based international order.

As global geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, the strengthening of India-Greece ties reflects a shared vision for stability and constructive engagement.
