India to hold 2+2 Dialogue with Japan to step up Defence cooperation
A sign of deepening ties, Defence & Foreign Ministers from two sides to meet in inaugural meeting in New Delhi on Nov. 30
India and Japan will discuss stepping up Defence and security ties in a 2+2 Dialogue involving Defence and Foreign Ministers from both sides in New Delhi on November 30.
This will be the inaugural meeting under the 2+2 format and will operationalise the decision taken by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shinzo Abe at the 13th India-Japan Annual Summit in Japan in October 2018. So far, India holds a 2+2 Dialogue on security cooperation only with the US.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will head the Indian delegation for the 2+2 Dialogue, while the Japanese delegation will be led by Foreign Affairs Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Minister of Defence Taro Kono.
The two sides will also exchange views on the situation in the Indo-Pacific region and their respective efforts under India’s ‘Act East Policy’ and Japan’s ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision’ for achieving their shared objectives.
"The 2+2 meeting would provide an opportunity for the two sides to review the status of and exchange further views on strengthening defence and security cooperation between India and Japan so as to provide greater depth to the ‘India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership’," the Ministry of External Affairs stated on November 29.
The two sides will also exchange views on the situation in the Indo-Pacific region and their respective efforts under India’s ‘Act East Policy’ and Japan’s ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision’ for achieving their shared objectives.
The 2+2 Dialogue comes close on the heels of high level visits between the two sides. Defence Minister Singh was in Japan recently on an official visit. On November 25, External affairs minister Jaishankar on Monday met Japan's National Security Adviser Shigeru Kitamura in New Delhi and discussed foreign policy cooperation. On November 23, Jaishankar concluded his visit to Nagoya, Japan, where he interacted with his counterparts during a G20 foreign ministers' meeting. He concluded the two-day event with a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi.
