The Cabinet on June 16, 2021 gave approval for restructuring OFB by dissolving it and reorganising it into seven Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) to oversee the 41 Ordnance Factories. The reorganised structure will be 100% owned by the Government. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stressed that the service interests of the 70,000 employees of the OFB will not be affected and requested to support this historic reorganisation in the interest of National Security and Atmanirbhar (Self reliance). The Indian Ordnance Factories are about 200 hundred years old and have a wealth of infrastructure and technical knowledge. For example the technology of making a gun or tank barrel exists with them which is not readily available else where. When the restructuring was mooted last year there was a lot of opposition from the workers. The seven DPSUs will be allowed autonomy which will lead to improve accountability and efficiency.
