What will the Russian Tank of the Future be Like?

The Russian tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod Concern (UVZ) has published a forecast regarding the armored vehicles of the future

A modernised version of the T-90 MBT, the T-90MS features a number of upgrades resulting from Russia’s recent combat experience

According to the company, the tank of the future should retain its main qualities: it is a maneuverable vehicle on tracks with powerful weapons and strong protection.

UVZ believes that in the future the environment for tanks will become even more aggressive, so the tank needs all-round protection. At the same time, the tanks of the future will be modular machines that can be quickly converted into vehicles for special tasks, for example, for urban combat. Also, according to Uralvagonzavod experts, we can expect an increase in the caliber of tank guns and the power of tank ammunition, giving new qualities to fire control systems.

To increase awareness, combat vehicles will be equipped with standard radars and drones launched from onboard, and the information will be processed by artificial intelligence. Tanks can be remotely controlled or operated in fully automatic mode.

At the end of 2024, UVZ announced many changes made to the design of tanks based on the experience of their combat use. “The tank of the beginning of 2022 and the tank of the end of 2024 are, one might say, two different combat vehicles,” noted the concern’s CEO Alexander Potapov.

Export Push: T-90MS

Russia is promoting the T-90MS main battle tank for export. The upgraded version of the tank was first presented by Rosoboronexport at the IDEX 2025 International Defence Exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

According to the Russian special exporter, the T-90MS has incorporated the most advanced technologies and new technical solutions. It is protected taking into account combat experience in countering the entire spectrum of modern anti-tank weapons: strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), FPV drones, ATGMs and RPGs. In addition to the protection suite, which includes dynamic protection, lattice screens, UAV electronic countermeasures, and active protection, the tank implements the principle of differentiated armor. The tank is equipped with a new “digital board” type fire control system. Integrated information and control command systems and other innovative solutions have been introduced into its design. The T-90MS also has increased firepower due to the ability to fire new armor-piercing sub-caliber, highexplosive fragmentation shells with remote detonation and guided missiles.

The tank’s mobility and controllability have been improved - a high-power engine and automatic gear shift control have been installed while maintaining the traditional low silhouette of Russian tanks, optimal weight, high mobility indicators and the ability to overcome most difficult obstacles on the move at high speed.

As Rosoboronexport CEO Alexander Mikheev noted in an interview with the ITAR-TASS news agency, Generals of various Armies have repeatedly said that the T-90MS is the best tank. During IDEX 2025, he invited “all friendly countries” to cooperate on this project.

In turn, the head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation of Russia (FSMTC) Dmitry Shugaev stated the high interest of foreign countries in the Russian experience of using tanks. Foreign countries are interested in both the dynamic protection of Russian tanks and other means of protection against drones, Shugaev noted.
